Block annoying flash movies and audio
The use of the NoScript addon to FireFox to protect you from the MySpace javascript phishing vulnerability discussed in my previous blog post here had a nice extra feature that I didn’t discover right away. In the options window, theres a neat little check box to block Macromedia flash content.
Maybe you like waiting 60 seconds every time you visit your friend’s ghastly Myspace profile with huge movies posted all over the place and auto-loading music files you’ve doubtless heard more than 50 times, but i don’t have time for that thanks. NoScript replaces all of them with a little NoScript icon. You can always load the ones you haven’t seen before by clicking on it.
On the topic of funny videos, I’ll admit I’m a fan - I visit milkandcookies.com daily - but don’t dare email that crap to me. Once someone decides to put me on their stupid-picture-of-the-day media-mailing-list I usually end up adding them and all their friends (whose email addresses conveniently came with the annoying email and they were too ignorant to hide from me) to my lengthy response to their intrusive email. Their friends usually pressure them to drop me from the list after receiving boatloads of political diatribes from yours truly.
Myspace comments are of the same ilk as most of the crap people email around to their friends. Usually in poor taste, an image posted to a friend’s comment roll is supposed to imply that someone is thinking of you I suppose. Call me old school, or just old - but I prefer to actually talk to my friends. A good substitute is an email, but an image? OK, if it’s a picture of you or me or someone we know, or a place we like to go, fine. If it’s *really* funny, ok. The rules of hanging out generally apply to website commenting as well; ie: if you don’t have something interesting or funny to say - please shut up.
