Erik the Viking re-release!

News

According to Cinema Blend, Terry Jones was never very happy with Erik the Viking (1989) and has decided to release a re-cut, shorter version of the film later this year! This post is mainly to remind myself to order it when it comes out in December, since I see no way of pre-ordering it on Amazon.

Nation Building

News

Before the 2000 election in a presidential debate against Al Gore, GW was on a different crusade attempting to convince Americans that if Al Gore became president we’d get bogged down militarily around the globe trying to bring democracy to undeserving nations.

I think we’ve got to be very careful when we commit our troops. The vice president and I have a disagreement about the use of troops. He believes in national building. I would be very careful about using our troops as nation builders.

– George W. Bush (Presidential debate, Oct. 4, 2000)

Freeway Blogger

News

Nobody died when Clinton liedThere’s more than one way to express yourself. Put your opinions into a blog on the internet, and you might reach some people that read blogs on the internet (specifically yours) but is that the most effective way to reach the masses? One Californian doesn’t think so.

Google to FCC: open up the spectrum

News

Caveat: I just read a couple quick articles on the topic, so I’m no expert on this subject. But it appears from Google’s recent announcement that they might want in on the 700MHz spectrum auction next year IF the FCC sets some conditions that the spectrum be an ‘open’ platform. Open as defined by Google is something along the lines that you shouldn’t be tied to specific hardware to use the network (as is often the case today with locked cell phones and wireless cards that only operate on a specific wireless provider’s network), that applications used to interconnect should be “open” and freely downloadable (today they are largely proprietary which can be very stifling to developers who use any operating system other than the authorized one). In an open network, the rules for connecting to it would be published (open) and developers would be free to write software to use it for any OS or device.

Cheney wants Bush to attack Iran

News

Who do you think is really running the government? If you said Dick Cheney, you may be right! What if I told you that even in the face of 6 years of the most embarrassing mistakes, downright incompetence, and outright lawbreaking committed by this inept administrator, he wants Bush to create what could easily be the biggest military miscalculation of all time. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Less prosperous than dear old dad

News

A liberal think tank report paints a less-than-rosy picture of the state of the American worker as discussed in this story on Alternet

Researchers for the Economic Mobility Project studied the relationship of adult children’s incomes to those of their parents and found that the United States now lags behind France, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Finland, Norway and Denmark in this measure of upward mobility. “There is little available evidence that the United States has more relative mobility than other advanced nations,” the group reported in May. “If anything, the data seem to suggest the opposite.”

Comparing the incomes of American men who were in their 30s in 2004 with males who were in their 30s in 1974, the researchers found that today’s men actually earn about 12 percent less, after inflation, than their fathers’ generation did. “There has been no progress at all for the youngest generation,” the group reported. The American family stays afloat because its total income has been swelled by women’s paychecks.

Roswell confession

News

Rupert Murdoch’s News.com.au is reporting that a signed affidavit by one Lieutenant Walter Haut, now deceased, a public relations officer at Roswell in 1947, to be opened only after his death reveals the story of the Roswell cover-up in all it’s glorious sci-fi wonder. Whether the affadavit is a huge posthumous joke is unknown, but it will undoubtedly be cheered by Roswell conspiracy fans everywhere. I find it only a little coincidental that these revelations happen to appear the same week as the 60th anniversary festival floods the town of Roswell with the ET faithful.
