Excellent Open Source Educational Game

Gaming

Ever since I “borgified” Cathy’s Dell (installed Mandrake Linux as a dual boot with Win98), it is rarely in Windows anymore. Everytime Emily wants to play a game, we would end up rebooting it so she could play one of her windows games. I wasn’t very happy with most of the windows games she has which don’t have much of a learning component and instead are sort of play activities designed to keep your kid quiet while you do something else. Since I would prefer to keep the machine running Linux (so that it can continue on in its role as a server), I needed to find some amusements that ran in Linux. There are some awesome games available, but Emily can only play TuxRacer for so long. I found a really excellent educational suite called GCompris which is entirely open source and offers a ton of cool learning activities. If you have a linux box and don’t mind stumbling over some required dependencies, I highly recommend it.
