Spitzer and privacy

News

I find myself thinking about how ironic it is that Gloria Vanderbilt’s son Anderson Cooper can ramble on about NY Governor Spitzer’s alleged illicit associations with high class prostitutes for hours on end on CNN tonight. Cooper is apparently a very private person and does not discuss his personal life, but word on the street is that he has been spotted at “gay spots” around town. While I’m certainly not comparing prostitution (which is illegal in the US) and being gay (which at least currently, is not) I still think that if anyone should feel uncomfortable about probing (if you’ll pardon the expression) into this private sexual matter it would be Cooper. spitzer.jpg No matter how you feel about prostitution, clearly these were two consenting adults - nobody was forced into anything. The whole thing is so obviously a set-up, but he so richly deserved to be set up. Personally I didn’t want to hear about the Governor’s indiscretions as long as he used his own money (and not mine). Spitzer was starting to shake things up and clean house. Thankfully, now the most dysfunctional state government in the country can get back to the business of wasting my money as they have done so well for so long.

This is not a matter of 2 consenting adults at all. The heart of the matter is that as Attorney General of NY, Spitzer was relentless in his prosecution of so called “prostitution rings” and now, with this news coming out we see him for the hypocrite that he is. I also dont know any NY’er that has been supportive of him since his failed plan to grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants was shot down.

I don’t think his hypocrisy is the issue (if it was a crime to be a hypocrite there wouldn’t be anybody left on the streets), the issue is whether he committed a crime, and how could he be so stupid as to get caught doing it. After all - he certainly should know what should trigger a bank report for suspicious activity. Since prostitution is a crime, and they have him dead to rights, he should be easy to charge - but as yet they haven’t done that, so he’s innocent (and will remain so until charged and found guilty in a court of law). He should resign immediately because we expect our elected officials to comport themselves in their personal and public affairs with more honor and dignity than he has shown.

Well, he is supposedly resigning at 11:30 AM today as of right now.

As far as I can tell it is the job of a CNN anchor to yammer on forever about whatever is the topic du jour. What else would they want to cover anyway. Darfur?

At least in the case of Spitzer he wass a Governor.

I heard that the original discovery came out of Hauppauge’s IRS office where they spotted money laundering. I think that they tracked him pretty closely after that, but how was the “whole thing” a setup?

At the time I wrote that things were still not really all that clear and I felt sure that either Bruno or the wall street crowd had somehow dangled a hottie and he took the bait, but even in hindsight days later it seems that the media circus was politically motivated - after all, he wasn’t even charged. How did the media find out about this? And even if that is all on the up and up, the point of my post is I don’t want to know about it. Prostitution should be legalized so it can be regulated and the prostitutes can be tested for diseases. Think of the tax revenues!
