Betting on a Mars blast

I lose enough money in the company lottery pool on odds much worse than this, so I’m betting asteroid 2007 WD5 will slam into Mars on jan 30th even though NASA is only laying odds at something under 4% right now that it will. The Near Earth Object Program has the details. Even if it doesn’t hit, it’s worth keeping an eye on the red planet if weather allows…

Similar in size to the Tunguska object that slammed into Siberia in 1908. The impactor hit the earth at that time was responsible for the largest Earth impact in recorded history, devastating 830 square miles of forest land. According to NASA, WD5 could unleash an explosion on Mars as large as a 3 megatons of energy, and would probably be visible to at least one of the several devices we have currently orbiting and crawling the surface of that planet. At the very least, a lot of people will be watching the skies that night with a slightly quickened pulse…
