What Long Island accent?

Journal

Its very rare that I bother with these little internet quizzes, but I’ve always had a particular interest in the wide variety of American accents, so this one sucked me in good. I grew up on Long Island, but I’m from what used to be called ‘the sticks’ which means not far enough in to be a city kid and not far enough out to be fashionable. The quiz is very simple, but surprisingly accurate, I think.

I recognized early on that I pronounced a lot of words differently from most of my neighbors whose families were originally from in closer to the city, while mine were from Wisconsin and DC, but several of my childhood friends were also missing the typcial “Long Island accent”, and their folks were from out here! I think there was definitely a divide on the Island at least when I was growing up (late 70s) that separated the more rural eastern Long Island from the more urban western sections. The prevailing accent out here at that time was either NYC Irish (people who had moved out from there after the 40s) or New England Boston-ite. The families that had been out here the longest had the least NY accent, and the greater Boston sounding accent. I took the quiz honestly, though the way that it’s arranged I don’t see how I could have answered otherwise - all the other answers were just WRONG! :)

You may think you speak “Standard English straight out of the dictionary” but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like “Are you from Wisconsin?” or “Are you from Chicago?” Chances are you call carbonated drinks “pop.”

But you TOTALLY have a Long Island accent Nate. TOTALLY! Maybe not like some, but once removed rom the region it is obvious. I still get told I have one too, and I’ve been out here for over a decade.
