Annoying and bad-tasting spam

SiteNews

Well, opening up the site for anonymous comments has brought me butt-loads of annoying referrer spam comments and *nothing* worth keeping. I’ll load the site and see about 20 comments, and every one of them is a stupid comment about how great my site is coupled with about 20 links to some website in an attempt to raise that site’s Google ranking. I’ve added two plugins to attempt to stem the problem, while keeping anonymous comments enabled (for now).

Installed: SpamX and Ban plugins from
pigstyle.net by tomw.

I’ve been getting hit by some idiot daily now, and haven’t had a single
valid comment by an anonymous user yet - so it’s beginning to look like
I may have to turn that feature off. SpamX and Ban have been blocking
a lot of these attempts to post spam comments (based on bad guys
listed in the the master MT-spam list), but not all - and frankly it’s a pain
in the ass to come home after a long day, finally get a chance to check
the email and have a drink and see 25 comments on this otherwise quiet
site and have to click through each one and delete them.

Although the spam and ban plugins work OK, the idiots spamming the site
get new domains almost weekly which means every week I have to deal
with deleting about 40 bogus spam comments (they post these to
attempt to raise the google status of the sites they own I think) that aren’t
blocked yet. This, coupled with the fact that the only people who
comment here sign in anyway has made me decide to pull the anonymous
posting feature (again). Oh well, sorry it didn’t work out.
