AdvanceCD arcade on a disk
I’m always on the lookout for cool Linux projects, and this one makes it so easy to create a bootable CD that can be used to turn any Pentium class PC easily into a full fledged arcade emulator that it’s certainly worthy of note. AdvanceCD uses Linux + AdvanceMame + Live CD + game ROMs (which you may or may not have) and allows you to create a working boot CD (you have to know how to boot your computer from a CD to use it) in a matter of minutes.
Basically you download the AdvanceCD package, unzip it, move your arcade ROMs and screenshots into the correct directories, and run a single command to create an ISO image which you can then burn on a CD (or onto a USB stick if you can boot from USB) and use it to boot the PC. I downloaded the package and created the ISO on a Linux machine, but I burned the ISO on my Mac. It booted fine on the two (very different) PCs I tried it on with absolutely no issue. At boot you’re greeted with a really friendly splash screen and not the typical Linux boot text which can be un-nerving to non-Linux users. Once in, you can select the game you want through an incredibly friendly selection menu of thumbnails formed by your saved screenshots (you had a screenshot for each ROM already right?). It’s a great way to introduce people to the power (and utility) of Linux and live CDs in a really fun way.
