Thinking about Saturn

Science

Just a quick note regarding Saturn this morning before I’m off to work: I never thought about the fact that Saturn has a tilt (similar to Earth’s) and that as it travels along its orbit about the sun, our of view of the planet changes so that we see the rings in different perspectives over time. It takes Saturn 29.5 years to orbit the sun, so the cycle is about that long so that in March its presented its rings at a 27 degree tilt to us so we could see more of its southern pole than usual.

Another article I found describes how on Dec 31 (New Years Eve!) Saturn will be at opposition (The Sun and Saturn will appear in to be in opposite directions from Earth) and that the shadows across the planet’s rings will become pronounced. Cool.
