Star Wreck, a parody
I downloaded Star Wreck last night, a free parody film made by a group of Finnish Star Trek and Babylon 5 fans. It’s surprisingly good (as parodies go) and it’s worth a watch if you’re a Star Trek fan. Oh yeah, get the version with subtitles: it’s in Finnish. Finland was taken over by Russia three times in the 20th century - and the blundering idiot Russians in the film are evidence of the fond memories most Finns have of this history.

My personal favorite Finn: Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux. Other cool stuff by Finns includes the epic poem the Kalevala

ZDNet
cites Reuters that Star Wreck has become the most watched movie
in Finland. It’s awesome, so I’m not surprised. The internet, cheap
computers and video cameras and other production equipment seems to
have leveled the playing field for film makers. The cash barrier to entry
for making a movie has been almost totally eliminated, and folks that
can marshall friends that possess a modicum of skill at all of these
technologies can produce something on par with that coming out of the
big movie industry! This is great news for creative people everywhere,
and BAD news for the movie industry, IMHO.
