Chekov to star in Fan film

StarTrek

I’ve mentioned the Star Trek fan film projects here before, but there was a big development for fans of the genre earlier this year that I missed somehow. Walter Koenig, the actor who played the Russian ensign of the USS Enterprise known as Chekov, will join the amateur all-fan cast of New Voyages for their third ‘web-isode’, another full length television show produced in the style of the original 1960’s Star Trek series, downloadable over the internet. More info on the return of Chekov and the writer behind the story…

Koenig, like the rest of the original cast is getting older. His character’s recurring role on the series was minor and a bit unsatisfying to Koenig, and he hopes to have a bit of fun resurrecting the role on the fan film project, New Voyages for their third episode. The CBC, Canada has a story from May about the announcement, while a press release on the fan site forum has even more info (last updated 8/5).

The episode will be written by Dorothy (D.C.) Fontana, who was, according to startrek.com, originally Gene Roddenberry’s personal assistant and went on to pen 12 of the original episodes, did a lot of work on the animated series, and helped co-write ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ with Gene, the show that launched ‘The Next Generation’ (as well as a few other Next Gen shows). She was the driving force behind the development of the Spock character and that of Dax in the Deep Space Nine series. It goes without saying that episode three of New Voyages will be something to watch for!

New Voyages with Walter Koenig as Chekov is out! I hadn’t been keeping on top of this project, and missed the initial release - but watched it today, and man - in a word, Awesome! It’s a big download (in high quality MOV format almost a gig), but worth it. I think I have to schedule a showing on the projector at work as I did last time they finished one up. Cruise over to the New Voyages link and check it out!
