Death of WinAmp
Heard on Slashdot that BetaNews is reporting that Nullsoft founder and WinAmp creator Justin Frankel has left the AOL subsidiary sounding the death nell for this my favorite of Windows media players. Full story here
I have to admit that ever since I got a Mac, I’ve used iTunes alot more, but I still run XMMS in X Windows occassionally (a WinAmp clone) just because its much faster (read: not bloatware)…
I even installed iTunes on the Windows PC at work, but still leave WinAmp as the default player so I can launch individual files quicker, also for movies since its *so much* faster and more reliable and easier to use than awful and buggy Windows Media Player.
AOLs wayward Nullsoftians were also the creators of the file sharing software Gnutella which was created and released under AOLs nose (this caused some consternation at AOL as you might imagine).
All in all, I just felt it would be nice to sing this program’s praises since it will likely be falling to the wayside from this point on.

Although I have switched over to using iTunes at work, it appears that the WinAmp Llama (now AOL music) is still alive and kicking with a recent release of version 5.11 on Oct. 21, 2005
